Wednesday night was Friends Night, and a ‘sold-out’ event celebrated our current Exhibition of 150 Years of the railway coming to this area. With a packed second floor of the library, our guest speaker was Bill Davies a retired engine driver on the ‘Bed-Pan Line’ and other parts of the South East. His talk was literally ‘On and Off The Footplate’ with tales of Dr Beeching, adventures in King’s Cross, the demise of steam, confusing the public, and the occasional near mishap. A fascinating insight into life behind the driver’s handle, accompanied by many photos for train lovers, and many amusing anecdotes. We were then treated to a quiz by Tevi Corman based around films and trains, right back to 1903!
