COMMUNITY AWARDS FOR OUR MUSEUM FOUNDERS

Before the recent Town Council meeting on Wednesday, four of the founders of our Museum were given prestigious Community Awards for all their hard work in creating and sustaining the history of Elstree & Borehamwood.  Mary Hanson, Ann and Alan Lawrence, and Florrie Cowley were presented with framed certificates, and the ladies also received bunches of flowers.  Town Mayor Eric Silver thanked them for all their efforts over the years.  At the end of the meeting they were surounded by fellow Museum trustees and volunteers to show their appreciation.

Hard Work Wins Our Volunteers Major Award!

On Thursday night at Abbott Hall in Stowmarket, part of The Museum of East Anglian Life, our two top Volunteers scooped the 'Collection Champions' Award – part of the 2017 SHARE Volunteer Awards.  Dave Armitage, Museum Manager, and John Woolston, Top Volunteer, received the Award for the Museum Modes team.

In the biggest category with 13 nominations, Elstree & Boreham Wood Museum won for their dedicated weekly work cataloguing the entire collection of artefacts in our possession, and for creating two exhibitions a year in our tiny space.  In contrast The Museum of East Anglian Life covers 75 acres!

It’s a great achievement – well done everyone involved!​

The Mayors Meet At The Mill

Mill Green Mill and Museum is a small museum centered around an old, but still working, mill in very pretty gardens on the edge of Hatfield. They are very busy, with 60 plus volunteers, and 3 full-time and paid staff.

The Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council, Clive Butchins, and his wife, Elaine, visited the Mill recently with Dave Armitage, our Museum Manager.  Clive took the opportunity to meet the Mayor of Welwyn-Hatfield, Cllr Pat Mabbott.  Lots of notes were compared, and a promise that they will visit us soon was made.

Elaine said “We enjoyed our visit very much and finished with coffee and scones, which were made from their own milled flour.”

Museum Gets A Makeover

Volunteers spent all day Monday creating a new shopping experience within the Museum. By cleverly removing a few panels here and a wall there, Dave Armitage and his team have made some changes to the display area.  The shelves look ready now to fill with those items you love to purchase when out visiting us!

The Scouts Drop in for a Visit

On Tuesday 18th of October a group of eighteen Cub-Scouts were welcomed into the museum for an evening visit.

Their trip opened with a tour round the museum to see our current exhibition on Shops and Shopping, ‘Down the Shops.’ This included weighing out sweets using old-fashioned Imperial measurements in ounces and using the clunking till with pre-decimal pounds, shillings and pence (and florins, halfpennies, sixpences and all) – much to their delight!

They then enjoyed a short talk suggested by their leaders regarding historic Childhood in Borehamwood, a talk supplemented with photographs from our collection.

The young people then interviewed a panel of museum Volunteers, asking any questions they liked and on a wide variety of topics.

Special Trustees Meeting

The Museum Trustees and Volunteers met on Monday to approve the accounts for the last year. Our photos show Chairperson Cynthia Barker and Norman Shuker signing the accounts, and the gathered Museum representatives.

Monksmead School Visits The Museum

In early June, 30 pupils from Monksmead School visited the Library and the Museum to participate in a series of workshops related to the Museum’s current exhibition, Smile Please!, on the early history of photography. The children had great fun making their own pin-hole camera, exploring local maps, following a Discovery Trail and learning, in an interactive way, how camera film was processed in the past.

Brain Of Borehamwood 2016

Museum Volunteer, Simon Gee, was presented with a pair of binoculars and the Brain Of Borehamwood Certificate by the Mayor for solving the most clues in the Teddy’s Trails quiz in the last Town Crier. The difficult and cryptic quiz was set by John Cartledge based round clues to be found in his descriptions of local people and places along the 18 Teddy’s Trails on the Town Council’s website.  These long walks, named after Teddy who has walked them all, involve a bus ride from the station and then a walk back into Borehamwood from every compass point. There are full descriptions of the history, architecture, and flora and fauna to be found on the way.  Although a recent resident of Borehamwood, Simon scored 8 and 2/3 out of ten, and says he learnt all the local history at the Museum!
